Thoughts On Transitions

No Maid? No Problem!

As I sit here in front of the computer, I am washing my clothes at the same time. Thanks to the washer and dryer that came with the purchase of our new Condo. A far cry from doing the laundry, pinoy boardinghouse style, sitting on a stool squeezed inside a tiny bathroom with a pail and Ajax detergent bar

Our washer and dryer are hidden in a closet on our foyer.

I like having no maids, you don't have to worry about your privacy being invaded. Besides here in the U.S. there are hardly any dust that you don't need worry about dusting everyday. Plus there are so many gadgets that make your life easier.

I recently discovered the joy of the dishwasher after this move. On our old condo we didn't use ours because Tom didn't get around to fixing it. And my thinking was, with just the 2 of us,  we don't use that many cutleries so a dishwasher would be a waste of soap and power. But now, I'm spoiled. What I do though is to put 2 days worth plates, utensils, pans etc. to conserve.

Kitchen counter with our black dishwasher. The George Foreman grill is highly recommended too.

Other winners are of course the staple vacuum cleaner (although I bought walis tambo to help sweep the nook and cranies), the Swiffer duster (dust clings to tissue like feather and is disposable) and Wet Jet (great alternative to mops, no need for pail of water, just push the button to spray liquid and the wipe with disposable pad).

Sometimes there is no choice but to buy product like these than do it the old fashion way. With mops for example, if you live in a condo, there isn't any yard where you can throw the dirty water. What we had to do before is to clean it in the bathtub or the kitchen sink and flush the dirty water in the toilet. I saw future plumbing problems there. And you can't get the mop really clean that way, it ends up making the whole place smell musty after use.

They say that having no maids would be a major issue for Pinoys immigrating to the US. But it is not for me. However, ask me again when I have a 2 year old

Next on my gadget wishlist? A dust buster.
