Thoughts On Transitions

My Four Dollar Experience

Coming from our Hong Kong buffet lunch, Peter wanted to drop in at a dollar store across the street for steak knives. Peter? With his huge flat screen Mac, Jack Spade bag and Motorola RAZR V3 cellphone? It doesn't add up. "Hey, their steak knives are really good!", so he tells me. This still-converts-everything-to-pesos filipina has always wanted to go to the dollar store, but I was afraid I would be just wasting my money for my purchases. Although Tanya (also from a poor country of Belarus) tells me her mother swears by it.

I came out happy and excited with my $4 buy. I found out that the store does have a selection of kitchen utensils which would normally cost at low-end department stores like Target for $4-$7! I got mine for only a dollar each. Their kitchen wipes works too; a couple of different brands at our local grocery would be priced at around $6-$8. Although I shudder to think the kind of chemicals they put in it. They are all made in China, of course.

Why the radio? I'm a regular listener of an early morning FM talk show (Eric and Kathy) while driving to work and they have these trivia contest which my listening gets interrupted as soon as I park in our office's lot. So I thought of having a small radio I can bring inside the building. Looked pretty fancy, huh? Especially when it lights up if a button is pressed. Sadly, it's a pain to use. Everytime the headset plug is nudged accidentally, it changes stations. Doesn't surprise me at all. Why, the 2 AA batteries were more expensive than the item itself.

Hey, 3 out of 4 ain't bad. I am going back there for additional kitchen and household supplies (e.g. cleaning, toilet brush, sponge...) and other whatnots (e.g. hair pins - $3+ at Jewel's, scoonchies etc.)

Tom's No Occasion Gift

Yesterday, Tom told me that our friend and his officemate Sheryl recommended that I read "The Time Traveller's Wife". The author is from Evanston and so is the setting. That got me excited. I trust Sheryl's taste. After all, we both liked Anne Taylor and loved the movie "Sideways".

Tom said he was going downtown and he might drop by our library to borrow it. He ended up buying me one since the library didn't have a copy. That's my husband, he may scrimp on a number of things but not when it comes to books and fitness (health club membership, my SELF mag subscription, my purchasing exercise video tapes et. al.).

Can't wait to start reading it!

Ger I told you they are a good deal. Some of them lang kay not worth a dollar bec some stores would carry it for less. When we were trying to stuff the house with cleaners our co-worker said madaku daw mi ug gasto sa cleaners lang but we got everything from Deals here, dollar store diri. Good deal jud !

hahaha! I'm not alone pala when it comes to katipiran and converting dollar to peso when buying something I like. I also love going to dollar stores and there was a time na one branch here in Bend was closing, so all of their items were on 50% off kaya ang lola mo nag hoard ng kung anik anik na pwedeng magamit at home.

Ger, i love going to 99 cents store! Bitaw i can get hair pins and scoonchies for Ashley for 99cents, LOL! This week i got a sungalsses too and not really that bad, rather spending hundreds for it...Na ambot, magdugay jud ko sa tindahan ug tan-aw kay mas barato kaysa department store pero kung i-convert pud sa pesos, P50 na pud pero mas maayo kesa P250 or more sa supermarket or any department store!
