A Church In Every Corner

When my tita Marita from Arizona flew over to attend my church wedding together with tita Leni from San Francisco, she couldn't help but marvel at the strong presence of churches here in Evanston. It was entirely the opposite where she came from, she told me. That made me sit up and take more notice.

From the top of my head here are some of the churches I am aware of within 1.5 mile radius from our condo.

True, right across our old condo at that time we even had a Quaker church. 3 blocks south was a Catholic church and also another one around six blocks north. Again, a common american "myth" disproven to me. Weren't we told a lot of times that most americans don't care about religion? Certainly not true, at least not here in Evanston.

St Mary's Church. I love how the steeples peek above the treetops.

(Above Left Photo) Evangelical Covenant Church - near the post office. (Above Right Photo) Emmanuel Methodist Church - is just right behind St. Mary's Church.

Doing a quick search at google, I found out that there are 144 churches in Evanston alone. Holy Macaroni! 144 for a population of 79,914? I'd be lucky if I can come up with 10 churches in my native hometown of almost 175,000.

(Above Left Photo) First Presbyterian Church - I just got a photo of the facade, this is actually one of the bigger churches here, it was too big to fit inside my lens, hehe. (Above Right Photo) Immanuel Lutheran Church. These 2 churches are just half a block from each other. Actually there are 4 of them in a cluster. One actually facing the other.

Well, it would also explain why in the Sts. Peter and Paul's church I regularly went to back in the Philippines on Sundays we had 8 masses that started at 4am in the morning and the last mass at 7:30 in the evening. Massgoers overflowing for every one of them. Talk about doing overtime. Whereas in our church here, they average 4 masses on Sunday and you don't have to worry about not getting a seat.

Honeylet, that great about not having to drive far to go to church.

Hershey, it's a novelty to me being surrounded by churches that not a the catholic church anymore.

Lan, when mo balhin puhon?

Mel, understanble naman talaga yan with the distance of the churches and 2 small and lively kids!

Sandy, yeah I remember the time you were lamenting about the far away distance of the ctaholic church from you before. it's great you discovered not only one but 2 that's near you!

Wow! That's a lot of church there! The pics are incredible. We had a few churches within the city but am sure glad that it would only take 2 minutes to get to our church.
