Don't Call Us

Finally last night I have registered our phone number to www.donotcall.gov to hopefully stop the incessant calling of telemarketers, solicitors etc. This will be good for 5 years. Imagine the expiry will be on 2010! Sounds bliss to me. How effective is it really? I will find out in 30 days.

We might have all kinds of problems in the Philippines but not this. I got the full brunt of the calls when I first arrived here in the US. Since I had to be jobless for 6 months and mostly stayed at home, I had to fend off these calls myself. From credits card companies, promise of vacations in exchange for attending their "seminars", newspaper and magazine subscriptions,  cable companies, surveys, charities, fireman, juvenile delinquents, retired policemen solicitations (believe it or not) etc. Even the credit card company that we are using is one of our more frequent callers trying to convince us to upgrade. But no can do. Back then it would at  least number like a total of 10 calls a day. No kidding!

Yes, I could have let the answering machine take messages but sometimes I'd think it would be Tom calling, or my high school or my mom's friends or relatives here in the US, or potential employers at that time while I was job hunting. Partly the reason why I'd answer the phone I was also curious. But oh boy, I am no match for these seasoned callers. It's like throwing a doe into the lion's den. But I got to admit that it was good practice for my verbal english and comprehension with all the accents and the colloquialism encountered. One time Tom had to ask what country was the telemarketer was calling from and he was informed India. Wow, no wonder, since it was already like 10:00 in the evening.

Tom mentioned to me that he read an article that said about the calling centers in India of how shocked they were at the number of rude americans they get entangled with, but who can blame them? It really is very intrusive. If they were in the shoes of the people here they would feel the same way.

I hope to see the end of this exactly a month from today. Just this evening we received 2 already. Sigh.

Kim, I just find it hard to believe that I won't recognize a filipino telemarketer if I hear one. Di ba, once you are here mas nakaka distinguish na tayo ng accents? Oo nga in our case may nakakalusot pa rin, like soliciting for Hurricane Katrina for tonight. But last weekend as in zero! That's a first jud!

Thanks to the "DO NOT CALL LIST". From at least 10 calls a day, we are down to at around 5-6 a week. These calls are from credit card companies that we are using and other stuff that we subscribe.

Dami na rin telemarketing companies based in PI. I know someone based in Cebu and they call people in the US.

Distinctive, yes, it's for the american public. What country are you from?

Carl, wala uy makonsensya man ko. I didn't know that you registered na.

Rose, we don't know how to set our caller ID. I guess, it's time to get a new phone hehe.

Makis, that's interesting to know that it's as bad in France too.

Sandy, yeah answering machines are a blessing, but also a curse when you are at the receiving end of it. I hate leaving msgs sa answering machine. Na co-consious ako haha.

Tess, I am learning that tactic too.

Hershey, the only time I got a filipino telemarketer was from Otel, but maybe also I didn't recognize the others as filipinos.

Lan, once a year kayong nacha-change? Grabe. Maganda nga yang idea na unlisted.

Hon, we get most of our calls past 8pm now. Kaya extra annoying talaga.

That's in indeed pain in the ass receiving those unnecessary calls. I hate when they call even pass 8:00 pm.

We changed our home number once a year, unlisted din kami. Pero mayroon pa rin kaming calls from Tellemarketers, very annoying nga eh. Yong "no calls" signed up din si John pero mayroon pa rin kaming tawag na unexpected. :D

Geri, its really annoying getting these calls. I used to listen to them talk and they wont let u butt in, they talk and talk first, but now i have learned to say, "sorry, not interested" and then hang up. happy weekend Ger!

Tellemarketer's call are really annoying! I'm so glad that our phone has a caller ID. When the caller's number is 1800, unknown, blocked or numbers that I don't recognize, I definitely don't answer the phone coz I know it's just a waste of time, so I just let the answering machine do the job for me :).

that is really annoying!!! sometimes i get about 10 calls per day too but i let the machine answer - if no message, then it's the annoying telemarketers, who - mind you, as soon as you answer the phone, they talk a mile a minute & doesn't allow you to speak until they've finished the intro - if i get caught, i say i don't speak french :) do you pay for that service though?

have a great weekend, geri!

Hey Ger... It did cut down a good number of calls but it still helps that we have the caller ID to screen them out since we still get a few calls. Kenny had fun with them sometimes. He would talk to them like he was interested and then pull a prank at them. Some found it amusing, some were not too happy. Serves them right.

i had mine registered too but i read an article before that you let your number be prone to more calls only, surprisingly, it indeed helped curtailing these nonesense calls. Did you try your suggestion to me before to answer them in our own dialect? hehehehe..never tried.

Interesting. Does that work everywhere. It seems like an American site.
