Black Friday
I've heard that phrase for the first time in the news today. Black Friday is deemed by many retailers and shoppers as the official start of the holiday shopping season. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, the latter which many filipinos may not know, falls on every fourth Thursday of November. As soon as the turkey is tucked in and digested, a lot of americans are geared up for some serious holiday shopping.
A few samples of the brochures that we get in the mail, we don't even subscribe to them. Junk mail really that clogs up not only our mailbox but our garbage as well. I like browsing those from Pier 1, Ikea, Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn though.
This morning at 10:00am (at13F/-10C temp) Tom was surprised that I had my foot out of the door for this mission already. Usually I'd put off my shopping at a I'm-more-awake hour of 2pm. But I've learned my lesson from last year, by the time I got there after lunchtime, there wasn't anything left for me. Good bargains that is.
Most department stores on Black Friday start opening their doors as early as 5:30am. They call this their Early-Bird-Special Sale. And some sale ends at 11:00am-12:00nn only, but store hours still continue. I was amused last year when Target had this tv ad of even having a we'll-call-you-to-wake-you-up service. I can't elaborate more this because I didn't dare sign up for it. Philippine weather might be more tolerable for me to getting out of bed at dawn, but the idea of standing in line outside the store in the chilly darkness even if bundled up is a challenge I am only too glad to pass.
And yes, according to the news, it was a mob out there early this morning. It also featured a fracas at Walmart with irate customers fighting over computers to buy. Saw one dad interviewed at how much he spent shopping for toys, "$1,025" was the reply. Goodness. That's almost 10 months of the minimum wage in the Philippines already.

Carlotz, it wasn't really that bad at 10am, calma naman ang mga tawo hehe
Gia, I was surprised myself when I saw on tv how just crazy it can get. In-in was telling me when she was still new and saw the crowd running towards the section she was manning she was really scared.
Rhebs, you're an asset so it would be hard for them to let you go, even if you don't always follow them hehe.
Tess, dala ng pangangailangan eh, a good friend offered to bring stuff for her PI isit this xmas, I couldn't let it pass and then I have to send it right away. I'm just glad there was no pila, di ko rin kaya yan.

Some people are pretty dense! I just don’t get it! I mean for few good bargains, I was told about 800 people actually stood in line as early as 8PM waiting for CompUSA to open at 12 midnight Thursday.
Last weekend, bossing asked if I want to come in to work for midnight madness sale since I put in to come to work Friday. I replied, "you’ve got to be kidding me! No, thank you!" When I called Wednesday to check on the schedule, I found out that he didn’t put me on schedule at all not even on the regular weekend that I am supposed to come in. Thought I got fired but I showed up to work Friday at 8AM anyway and no one said a thing so I am still in business ;-)
