My First Marathon

There was a change of plans. Instead of doing the shortest leg (4.2 miles) of the relay race during the Grand Rapids Marathon this morning, I did final leg of 5.15 miles (8.28 kilometers). When our group Voltes V made the decision the night before, I nervously accepted my new assignment but was also excited at being tasked to cross the finish line. And I did it under the desired 1 hour (52 minutes; a not bad 10 minute per mile).

My relay race Grand Rapids Marathon finisher medal. Isn't it the prettiest thing?

The rest of the team did a better overall time too than was calculated for the 26.2 miles race. Instead of the expected 5h:20mins finish it was a faster 4h:47mins (almost the same as Oprah's). A lot of the improved time has to do with the excitement of running with/against other runners, the nippy temprature (I was just dying to run to get my body warm) and the breathtaking scenery as a distraction (my route was in a forest preserve, by a small lake, crossing a river via a charming wooden bridge, then a part of the city).

At the Hall Lake forest preserve in Grand Rapids. As if running a marathon wasn't enough
our team and family trekked this area the afternoon before.

It was a great experience. I met new people. I saw inspiring runners: seniors running a full marathon, parents running a full marathon bringing along their special needs children in wheelchairs, an expectant mom with "future runner" and an arrow pointing to the belly part on her shirt. I got to know my filipino neighbours and their really nice filipino friends from Michigan (and they are all, uhurm, voting for Obama). I got to visit a new city. I reached a milestone too, it was my first overnight away from my son.

I will definitely do it again, who knows I might be doing the half-marathon or even full next year. More photos to come.

Woo-Hoo!

While I was away I learned that a popular, influential and respected Republican figure Colin Powell endorsed the main man Barack Obama. What awesome welcome back news!

Not Only That

The right leaning newspaper Chicago Tribune had endorsed him too, their first democrat for president endorsement since they started in 1847. In their editorial:

"We have known Obama since he entered politics a dozen years ago. We have watched him, worked with him, argued with him as he rose from an effective state senator to an inspiring U.S. senator to the Democratic Party's nominee for president.

We have tremendous confidence in his intellectual rigor, his moral compass and his ability to make sound, thoughtful, careful decisions. He is ready."

Keep the good news rolling!

Ed, sub seven minute mile, wow! I know, I couldn't believe it myself that it took me this long to be able to spend overnight away from Evan. And I thought I was going to be relaxed/cool parent, haha. It was a nice break though.

MC, I also live in a very liberal city and the first time I saw a McCain/Palin sticker was during this trip in Michigan.

Rhebs, I am always proud of you for having your own mind that not even your beloved DH can influence you if you don't agree with him. That's what appealed to me with McCain at first because like Powell he wasn't really a Republican through and through. That's what I like about you too.

Julie, Daily Digest is from Grand Rapids? I didn't know that. I used to read those in college.

Tin, thanks!

Joanne, I sure hope I will be as motivated to do the marathon next year as I am now.

Lily, did it snow na?

Tin,

To tell you the truth, I am not sure who between McCain and Obama he is favoring. He cited good things about McCain and Obama but criticized both of them too.

Would you believe he never told me who he voted for yesterday? I threatened him that if McCain loses in Florida by 1 vote, that I would blame him for it LOL

Congratulations, Geri :)

That view is wonderful. All I know about Grand Rapids is this is where the Our Daily Bread is printed :D

Congratulations Geri, another feather in your cap. Keep that up.

I was in a street/food fair on Sunday [while you were running I was eating :D] and saw a woman wearing an Obama shirt with THAT ONE inscribed under his face. What a hoot. There was a booth selling OBama shirts with change written on it and buttons, but I could not find a THAT ONE shirt. Nope, there was not a single McCain shirt here. What do you expect? This was in Berkeley. Not that there are no Reps here, except that this is one liberal place.

~WOW~ Congrats, Ger!!! That's certainly a big feat considering you've only been training in the last few months. I am proud of you girl :-)

Re: Powell’s endorsement on Obama

I wasn’t surprised considering his disagreement with the Bush Administration policies early on. In fact, there were some speculations in the past that Powell would ultimately endorse Barack Obama.

We all know he resigned from his position as secretary of state earlier and confided that he was initially opposed to Pres. Bush to invade Iraq but eventually agreed to go along with him (duty call maybe) but then I recalled he was in fact, the strongest advocate for the surge. This is the guy that believed if we go to war, we've got to do it all the way to the end and I admired him for that.

And if you recalled in our group discussions during the primaries, I am personnaly rooting for Powell as McCain's VP pick.

I read he is really not a Republican through and through which I like... I guess I can say he is a modest Republican and is known for his willingness to support liberal policies because of his stand on the war on Iraq, pro-choice on abortion, tax cuts and affirmative action for minorities and etc.

I do believe he’s got some very personal reasons for choosing Obama over McCain and that the American people should respect him for that but I don’t think his endorsement is really going to influence majority of the voters' decision...at least he didn't change mine a bit. But then you know that NO one else can ever change my mind not even my Darling Tony ;-)

I remember as a kid having to run a sub-seven minute mile for a physical fitness merit badge in the boyscouts. Now, I would be happy if I ran a sub-fifteen minute mile. Congratulations!

First night from Evan! Wow, and I thought Mrs. Abbey and I were bad since we've only spent perhaps eights or so nights away from Little Abbey since she was born. But I understand completely. I just hate the idea of it!
