Dressing Up In Below Zero Temperature
Back in my pre-American days I have often wondered how to dress up in the freezing cold. Now after 5 years in the U.S. I have finally found what works for me. Tried and tested even in the -6F (-21C) temp last Friday:
long sleeved shirt (turtleneck if commuting), long underwear (only for 2F-below, no long underwear if above 2F unless commuting), pair of long socks
down vest (better than the sweater since it provides a thicker cover for the stomache which is more sensitive to cold and no thick sleeves to bunch up under the arms of the already thick winter coat), thick pair of pants (dark colored - snow brings mud with it), high boots (with the pants legs tucked underneath it)
down winter coat (about 1/4 inch thick), pair of gloves (different pairs with varying thickness), head band & scarf (for covering the ears and nose on windy days - only when commuting or long walks too. The colder the weather the longer the scarf.)
Putting all these clothes on me takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Putting the same layers (and then some) of clothing on a squirming toddler takes about an hour. Seriously. That's already 300 calories burned and we're not even out of the house yet.
Half Marathon Memoirs

Lily, I can't imagine dressing any lighter than this if I had to go outdoors for more than 5 minutes nowadays. Hay, I wish for us summer homes in tropical cities wherever they are (but preferably in Hawaii hehe)

Grabe gyud diay ka-cold diha no? We had our coldest this winter last week but I didn't have to dress like you do.
After spending a week in Disneyworld, I am so ready to move to FL:)hehehe! Seriously, I would someday love to have the luxury of spending my winters in Pinas or FL and the rest of the year in Maine...
Stay warm...take care, God bless you and your family!
